How it Works

Purple Tree® is a natural multivitamin for the active, health-conscious adult who drinks. We are on a mission to help adults who enjoy alcohol to lead more productive, healthier work, fitness, and family routines. Purple Tree® was scientifically designed to accelerate alcohol metabolism in the liver and support the body’s inflammatory system in a natural way. It also helps to promote liver health and replenish key vitamins that are lost during alcohol consumption.

The Science Behind Purple Tree

It helps accelerate alcohol metabolism in the liver.

Fact: Alcohol is consumed at a faster rate than our liver is able to process it. Our liver can process one standard drink in one hour. When we consume more than this, the additional alcohol (and its damaging toxin Acetaldehyde) will accumulate in the blood and body tissues (like the brain) until it can be metabolized. This toxin accumulation in our bodies is what causes the next-day headache, nausea, and fatigue that we feel after a night of drinking.

Purple Tree’s key ingredient is called Dihydromyricetin (DHM), an extract from the Japanese Raisin Tree, which has been used for centuries as an anti-alcohol herb and hangover cure in Asia. Dihydromyricetin has also demonstrated antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, anticancer, hepatoprotective, and anti-hypertension properties. [1]

So what makes it such a key ingredient for Purple Tree? In addition to its many health benefits, Dihydromyricetin is able to enhance the activity of the ADH enzyme [1], the main alcohol metabolizer. This means our liver can now break down alcohol faster [3], leading to less toxin build up in the blood and the brain. By accelerating alcohol breakdown and promoting liver health at the same time, Dihydromyricetin is a key ingredient to combat the next day effects of alcohol in our body.

It supports the body’s immune system in a natural way.

Fact: Alcohol triggers an inflammatory response from your immune system. An imbalance of the immune system has been identified by scientists as a key factor in creating the dreaded hangover state. Especially hangover symptoms like nausea, headache, and fatigue have been suggested to be mediated by changes in the immune system.

Purple Tree’s proprietary blend uses White Willow Bark extract, a natural ingredient which has been used to treat various inflammatory conditions [9]. The bark contains Salicin, a compound that is also known as “Nature’s Aspirin” due to its natural anti-inflammatory properties.

It replenishes key vitamins lost during alcohol consumption.

Fact: Alcohol depletes key vitamins in your body. Alcohol is known to deplete a multitude of nutrients in your body, including vitamins B1, B2, B6, B12, zinc, magnesium and others. Raising your levels of these nutrients is crucial to maintaining a healthy mind and body after a night out.

For these reasons, taking a B-vitamin fueled supplement like Purple Tree before and after drinking alcohol is a helpful way to support your body’s normal functions while also reducing the impact of hangovers.

It promotes liver health.

Fact: Alcohol may cause liver damage. When you drink alcohol, your body breaks it down into Acetaldehyde, a toxic chemical that’s dangerous to our body and liver. To break down Acetaldehyde into a harmless substance, our body needs to increase its levels of glutathione. Studies have shown that taking N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) can contribute to avoiding damage to your liver because it increases our body’s levels of glutathione [10].

Purple Tree uses a pure, lab-tested version of N-Acetyl-Cysteine (NAC) in its proprietary formula in order to enhance its hepatoprotective activity and promote liver health. Dihydromyricetin also improves liver function after alcohol consumption as it helps the liver process alcohol more quickly and efficiently.

Causes of Hangover

While we’re all familiar with the delightful symptoms of a hangover (headache, trembling, nausea, fatigue, dehydration, diarrhea, etc), scientists are actually still trying to understand in detail what exactly causes them.

If you were to ask someone “What causes a hangover?”, chances are you would get different answers from different people. The most common answer you would hear is “Dehydration”. Dehydration occurs when you drink heavily, however, most hangover symptoms are not prevented by attempts at staying hydrated.

Recent studies show that the main hangover causes are linked to alcohol metabolism in the liver and its effect on our immune system. Our team’s scientific research has focused exactly on these issues while developing Purple Tree’s proprietary formula.
